About Rio Grande do Norte

The Rio Grande do Norte is one of the 27 federal units of Brazil. It is located in the Northeast and is limited by the Atlantic Ocean to the north east, Paraiba and Ceara south west. It is divided in 167 municipalities and its total area is 52 796.791 km ², equivalent to 3.42% of the area of the Northeast and 0.62% of the surface of Brazil, being slightly larger than Costa Rica. The state's population in 2010 census was 3,168,027 inhabitants, being the sixteenth most populous state in Brazil. On the national flag, Rio Grande do Norte is represented by the star Shaula (Scorpius).
